The rest is repair: a run that blocks repeatedly, a collapsed section, a cracked chamber, a gully that backs up in heavy rain. The important part is identifying the cause instead of clearing the symptom, because a run that blocks every few months usually has a fall, a joint or a root problem that clearing will not cure.

Building over a live drain
A run left under a new foundation without a proper diversion, lintel or protection becomes inaccessible. When it fails, and buried pipework under load eventually does, the repair goes through the floor of your new room.
Falls that are wrong
Too flat and solids stand in the pipe; too steep and liquid runs away from solids. Both cause repeat blockages that no amount of rodding will cure, because the problem is the geometry rather than the debris.
Repeat clearing instead of diagnosis
Paying for a jet clean two or three times a year is more expensive than finding the displaced joint, root intrusion or collapsed section causing it. A camera survey answers it in an afternoon.

Materials, methods and standards
Runs are laid in plastic underground pipe with sealed joints on a granular bed and surround, at falls suited to the pipe diameter, with straight runs between access points wherever the layout allows. Chambers are built with adjustable plastic systems or masonry with benching, and covers are chosen for their location: a driveway cover is not a garden cover.
Where an extension has to cross a run, options include diverting it outside the footprint, building a lintelled protection over it, or encasing it; the choice depends on depth, position and what building control will accept for the design.
Pipework near a public sewer, or connecting into one, brings the water authority's requirements into play, and that is identified before quoting rather than discovered mid-dig.
